Comparative Political Economy by David Boaz

Given all this history, the interesting question is why some people in the United States want to continually transfer such vital functions as energy and health care from the competitive, accountable, capable entrepreneurial sector to the slower-moving, plodding, command-and-control bureaucratic sector. (Of course, the already-government-influenced health care and energy industries are not the most entrepreneurial sectors of the economy. But as the examples above demonstrate, even imperfect markets work better than government direction. Nor are the government-run local schools very competitive or accountable, but they are more so than they will be under tighter federal control.)

An Open Letter to A Correspondent by Don Boudreaux

But the most fundamental reason I support free trade is that it is immoral for me to tell you how to spend your money and for you to tell me how to spend my money. And it is immoral for the likes of Pres. Obama or Sen. Graham to tell you and me and other Americans how to spend our money. For me, defense of free trade is ultimately a defense of right over wrong, peace over force, and mutual respect and tolerance over self-righteous condescension, intolerance, and greed camouflaged as dispassionate economic policy.

Trade and Civilization by Don Boudreaux

Trade and civilization are intimately, indissolubly connected. Trade creates civilization. The greater the freedom to trade, the more civilized the society; the more civilized the society, the greater the freedom to trade.

Historian Will Durant (1939) penned one of my favorite descriptions of the ultimate benefit of open, free commerce – pointing out that reason itself is a child of open trade:

The crossroads of trade are the meeting place of ideas, the attrition ground of rival customs and beliefs; diversities beget conflict, comparison, thought; superstitions cancel one another, and reason begins.
Put another way, protectionism not only keeps prices unnecessarily high and not only creates unjustified special privileges for the politically powerful few. Most importantly, protectionism breeds ignorance and stupidity, two arch-enemies of civilization.

  1. Manuel, I am not an economics student. I do know Free trade is very important for the flourishing of businesses and individuals. I certainly agree. How could one not? Additionally, I know what President Obama and his People are trying to do in our country is unethical, and--more accurately-- a great Darkness once true intentions are unmasked. He has a totally different vision for America, one unlike that of our forefathers (and even as important) in total opposition to what *Most Americans want.

People are fighting hard as we speak!! We feel we are trying to fight for who we really are, who we believe is Right in the face of a government who believes it is entitled to all that we are. This enemy seems to have woken over night. But it has been here for some time, only hiding...waiting for the opportunity to take Power--that they believe is their Right-- by the reigns.

How totally contrary to everything America has ever been and stood for! His visions are very insidious and that is what is so dangerous.
Of great importance, it is not only his visions for this country, but visions belonging to Communist radicals who have been waiting since the 60's to pounce on the opportunity, once given the chance, to assume ownnership of every element of human life--as if they were entitled to such a thing.

Total Government control essentially?? We have never in our wildest dreams conceived of such a Thing! The people with which Obama has allied himself are sickening(morally, ethically, personally) and, therefore, odious to the highest degree. They are like black ink on a white dress. As a leech on a healthy individual. A wolf in sheep's clothing.

We have certainly been taken by Surprise. However, a great counterattack is under way. His people are so much more Radical than they pretend to represent themselves. But we know the Truth. Obama is only our president in Name, nothing else. He is not an American. He is as anti-American a president I have ever seen.
